Franck & Ravel
When French composer Paul Dukas wrote The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, he probably didn’t realise it would become one of the catchiest works in music history. It’s a tale of magic and ego: a budding magician bites off more than he can chew. You can imagine the character is Mickey Mouse, if you like – Walt Disney thought it was a good match in his film Fantasia.
While we’re dreaming of French music, Lannion-born pianist Jean Efflam-Bavouzet will play Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. It was written in the Jazz Age, and you can certainly hear it. Modern, classical, atmospheric – it’s Ravel at his finest.
France-born conductor Lionel Bringuier will bring this concert home with Cesar Franck’s dramatic Symphony in D minor. Don’t be fooled by the quiet introduction because you’ll be thrust into the storm of this 19th-Century masterpiece.
